Plans for world’s biggest windfarm off Scottish coast
Moray Offshore Renewables (MORL) submitted plans to the Scottish government for a 339-turbine windfarm off the coast of Caithness, Businessgreen reported on Friday 31 August. If the £4.5bn project is approved it will be the world largest wind offshore wind farm at 1.5GW, bigger than the 1GW London Array wind farm currently under construction. Work is expected to begin in 2015. MORL has estimated windfarm would generate enough electricity to power 40% of Scottish households, and would save more than one third of the six million tonnes of coal used in power generation in Scotland every year. RenewableUK chief executive Maria McCaffery said the application was a "watershed moment", and that a "timely consent" for the application could lead to other "milestones" being quickly achieved.
