UK onshore wind reaches capacity milestone

On Friday 21 September Renewable UK, the trade body for the wind and marine energy industries, claimed the UK has passed 5GW of installed onshore wind capacity. Renewable UK said the milestone was reached with the operation of AES's 28.6MW Scottish Borders project. The renewables trade body said that each megawatt of onshore wind capacity contributed £100,000 to the local are it was installed in. Chief executive Maria McCaffery said the benefits of onshore wind for communities, bill-payers and the environment were "well understood", and two-thirds of the public backed the resource. She added the number of people employed in the sector could double by 2020, so it was important to maintain "this surge in momentum".
