The Crown Estate details potential for wave and tidal power

The Crown Estate, the body responsible for property around the UK owned by the state, issued a report on Thursday 11 October detailing the extent of wave and tidal power across the UK. The Crown Estate estimated the UK's theoretical potential for wave power to be 27GW, tidal stream at 32GW, tidal range using barrage schemes at 45GW and tidal range using lagoons at 14GW. The report issued included the Crown Estate using its Marine Resource System, with input from industry and in association with a number of government departments to complete the assessment. The majority of offshore wave resources are located in Scottish waters, although significant resources can be found off the coast of southwest England and Wales. Similar amounts of tidal stream resources are seen across the UK, while England and Wales share the largest area of tidal range resources.
