Targeted support vital to future of renewables: WWF-UK

Technology-specific support policies create certainty for renewable energy investors and accelerate the use of low-carbon sources, according to a new WWF-UK report released on Tuesday 23 October. On Picking Winners argued that, while carbon pricing would have an important role to play in addressing climate change, it alone would be insufficient to promote cost reductions in renewable technologies. In particular it was feared the mechanism would drive investment from coal to gas. Report author Rob Gross said the UK needed a "horses for courses" energy policy, and while the government understood this requirement, it was often being urged to "simplify" its approach.
