Renewable energy targets “unnecessarily expensive”, says think-tank

On Thursday 5 May researchers at think-tank Policy Exchange said the UK should abolish its renewable energy targets and cut carbon emissions in a more cost effective way. 2020 Hindsight examines 16 different decarbonisation plans which lead to an 80% reduction in UK carbon emissions by 2020. The report found that the country could save £12.5bn by scaling back ambitious wind developments, advocating energy efficiency, building new nuclear power stations and supporting carbon capture and storage technology. The renewable energy target was described as "hugely and unnecessarily expensive" and it was suggested the UK renegotiate its EU 2020 renewable energy target.
