Government lays out future energy plan
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published its finalised National Policy Statement (NPS) for Energy on Thursday 23 June. The statement details the future framework for planning decisions related to major energy projects. The nuclear NPS detailed eight sites suitable for nuclear reactors across the country including Bradwell, Sellafield and Sizewell. Energy minister Charles Hendry said the plans were an "important milestone" in achieving the Government's goal of making the UK an attractive market for investors to support efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy. The trade body for the nuclear industry, the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), welcomed the NPS, the chief executive Keith Parker said the statement provided a "clear pathway to for the UK's energy future".
