Huhne calls on smaller energy suppliers to break the dominance of the Big Six

Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne is hosting a meeting with small energy suppliers on Thursday 7 July to discuss what help they require in order to break the dominance of the Big Six. Suppliers will meet with ministers to discuss barriers to entry and growth and explore issues surrounding market liquidity and complexity. Huhne described the current market, where 99% of people get their electricity and gas from the Big Six, as "madness" and called for more companies and more competition to keep prices "as low as possible". The summit was scheduled to take place only a few days before the Government is due to publish its White Paper on its Electricity Market Reform proposals, which it says will increase competition in the energy sector.
