EU ETS here to stay, says commissioner

Speaking at the launch of Sandbag's report Buckle Up! on Thursday 14 July European commissioner for climate action Connie Hedegaard said the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is "here to stay". She described the scheme as the "central element" for meeting the EU's targets of cutting emissions by 20% by 2020. Hedegaard described the current over-abundance of allowances was an "imperfection" and the cause of the oversupply was the unexpected economic crisis. The commissioner concluded the scheme needed to be improved and re-inforced to reduce the amount of supply.
