Nuclear supporters outnumber opposition, despite dip in nuclear confidence

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) published the results of its public opinion poll on nuclear power on Thursday 4 August. The NIA commissioned an extra poll this year to gauge the effects of the Fukushima disaster in March. The key finding was that the public still supports nuclear power as a key part of the UK's future energy mix. 68% of respondents said they support the technology, but this is down from last year's report by two percentage points. There has been a decline in support for new nuclear compared to last year, but more people are still in favour compared to those against. 36% of people agree with replacing old nuclear power stations, as opposed to 28% against.
