Opposition accuses government of inaction on energy price rises

In response to more announcements from the Big Six energy companies about increasing residential energy prices, shadow energy secretary Meg Hillier accused the Prime Minister of standing back and watching "unfair" price rises occur on Tuesday 16 August. She said it was time for the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets to step in and review the price rises that have taken place over the summer. The same day director of external affairs at Consumer Focus Adam Scorer said price rises would be "a source of great frustration for customers" as wholesale prices reach a three-month low. He said the rises would be hard to swallow especially as the some of the Big Six companies have posted increases in profits. And he also called for a competition review to look at market structure to ensure it was fair and transparent for consumers.
