Huhne attacks “green economy deniers” at renewables conference

In his speech to the RenewableUK annual conference on Wednesday 26 October energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne highlighted the benefits of investing in green energy to the UK economy. He said "an unholy alliance of short-termists, armchair engineers, climate sceptics and vested interests" were selling the UK economy and ingenuity short. He said the economic benefits of investing in renewable energy would realise a "third industrial revolution" and, even though the UK accounts for only 2% of global emissions, it has the potential to account for "far more" than 2% of the solution. Huhne mentioned the need to keep a diverse energy portfolio, and was critical of those who pinned all their hopes on shale gas. He said it was unknown weather the resource was economically or environmentally viable, saying it was unwise to "lash" the economy to one energy source.
