First marine energy park to be located in South West

On Monday 23 January climate change minister Greg Barker announced that the UK's first marine energy park will be located in the South West stretching from Bristol through to Cornwall. The South West Marine Energy Park will create a collaborative partnership in the region between national and local government, local enterprise partnerships and universities in the area with the aim of speeding up progress of marine power development. This announcement builds on £100mn which has already been invested in the South West marine energy industry over the past seven years. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said that by 2050 marine power in the UK could have a capacity of 27GW. Barker said the UK is "already a world leader in wave and tidal power" and the country "should capitalise on this leadership to make marine power a real contender in the future energy market."
