EU energy companies call for 2030 climate targets

Eight energy and utility companies from across Europe called on the Commission to set binding goals for climate change and energy policy beyond 2020, Businessgreen reported on Thursday 23 February. In an open letter to the Commission companies including DONG Energy, SSE and Eneco said the EU needs more ambitious carbon reduction targets for 2030 in order to boost investment in emerging green energy technologies. The companies warned the EU will miss its 2050 target to cut carbon emissions by 80% unless it sets an interim emissions reduction goal. Chief executive of DONG Energy Anders Eldrup said "having a table investment climate is critical for energy companies" if they are to increase the level of renewables in their generation fleets.
