DECC gives green light to fracking, but with conditions
On Tuesday 17 April the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)published an independent review of reports commissioned by Cuadrilla Resources on the company's shale gas exploration through the process of hydraulic fracturing, known as "fracking". The review recommended measures to mitigate the risks of seismic tremors that can result from the fracking process, both at Cuadrilla's Blackpool site and at other potential sites across the UK, including the use of effective monitoring systems and adopting a traffic light control regime. Comments are invited by 25 May and; responses will be used to finalise a decision on further fracking. Alongside the review the department also published two background notes on shale gas exploration and induced seismicity.
