DECC clears way for Total to dynamic kill Elgin well
The operation to stop the gas leak at the Elgin gas well was given the go-ahead by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on Thursday 3 May. Operator of the well Total were given the environmental permits necessary to undertake a dynamic kill operation to attempt to stop the gas release from the Elgin well. The operation will use heavy drilling mud pumped into the well from the wellhead. DECC has carried out a full environmental assessment of the operation and a spokesman said the government and Total had been working hard to ensure the Elgin well gas release is dealt with "as quickly and as safely as possible with minimal impact on the environment".
