Government issues response to report on Fukushima impact
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published the government's final response to the Weightman report on Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami: Implications for the UK Nuclear Industry on Monday 25 June. In light of the report, the government intends to: strengthen its work with international partners on nuclear power safety, particularly through the International Atomic Energy Agency; implement a new National Strategic Framework for nuclear emergency planning and response; and ensure transparency in work undertaken to create the Office for Nuclear Regulation as a statutory body.
Shadow energy minister Tom Greatrex said the safety of the UK nuclear power industry was of "paramount importance". He added the government had a responsibility to ensure regulatory regimes were as "robust" as possible, but noted the report did not call into question a continued role for nuclear power in the UK energy mix. Greatrex concluded it was key for the government to provide investors with support and confidence to deliver the construction of new capacity in the nuclear power industry.
