IEA sees renewable energy growth accelerating over next five years

The International Energy Agency (IEA) published its Medium Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2012 published on Thursday 5 July. The IEA said renewable electricity generation should expand by 1,840TWh between 2011 and 2017--almost 60% above the 1,160TWh growth registered between 2005 and 2011. Renewables generation will increasingly shift from OECD to new markets, with non-OECD countries accounting for almost two-thirds of the growth. The report also found hydropower continued to account for the majority of renewables generation, and the IEA predicts hydropower to register the largest growth of any single renewables technology between 2011 and 2017. After hydropower, wind, solar and bioenergy are also expected to see significant increases
