Drax confirms biomass generation plans

On Wednesday 25 July the Drax Group, operator of the UK's largest power station, said it was confident it could transform its power station into a predominantly biomass fuelled generator within five years. The Group welcomed the government's confirmation of the "strategically important role" for sustainably sourced biomass in the UK's renewable energy mix. Drax now plans to convert three of its six generating units, but said it would take "some time" to develop all of the sustainable biomass to fuel them. Drax reported promising progress on its research and development into biomass burning and the company has spent an extra £20mn acquiring biomass this year. Chief executive Dorothy Thomson also confirmed the Group was refining its previously announced £650mn-£700mn capital investment plan, but said it remained confident of the overall scale.
