Academics launch peak demand research project

Researchers at the University of Oxford have launched a five-year programme to investigate ways of relieving peak demand on the UK’s electricity grid. The METER project—launched on Monday 16 May—is aiming to assess data from volunteers in order to understand patterns of electricity usage, and to see whether there are acceptable ways of shifting demand. The principal investigator of the project, Dr Phil Grunewald, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for everyone to get a picture of their own electricity use, while contributing towards the big challenge of making sure that our sustainable energy future will also be secure and affordable.”
