Burnham backs fracking moratorium
Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham has confirmed that he would advocate a moratorium on fracking. In his leadership manifesto, published on Thursday 6 August, Burnham said that shale gas exploration was “being driven ahead at speed by people in Westminster with scant regard for the views of the communities most affected”. He said he would support a ban until much clearer evidence was presented on its environmental impact, and that even then it should be local people and communities who had the final say. Burnham also criticised the government’s “withdrawal” of support for renewable energy, saying it is “where our future lies”.
