Business group urges stop to “flawed” smart meter programme

The Institute of Directors (IoD) has called on the government to pause its “flawed” smart meter roll-out. In a statement on Thursday 31 March, the group said new government figures showing just 2.3mn domestic smart meters had so far been installed showed that the programme was well behind schedule on the targeted completion year of 2020. The organisation warned that flaws in the scheme could see consumers paying for meters that would bring them “little or no benefit”.  Dan Lewis, senior infrastructure advisor at the IoD, said: “Frankly, the whole project is a bit of a mess. The government must now admit that it’s not going to plan and pause the roll-out while they consider their options.”
