Business leaders urge more ambitious energy efficiency target

A coalition of business leaders published an open letter to the European Commission on Thursday 14 July, calling for a “much more” ambitious energy efficiency target for 2030 to be set. The group—including the CEOs of Veolia, Phillips Lighting, Kingspan and Knauf Insulation Group—called for a high binding target for 2030, “well above” the current non-binding 27% target, which “barely corresponds to business as usual”. The letter, co-ordinated by the European Alliance to Save Energy (EU-ASE) said: “putting efficiency first would not represent a cap to economic growth, rather the opposite, as it boosts the competitiveness of our European industry and would also contribute to gas import reductions by 2.6% for every additional 1% in energy savings.”
