Businesses urge government to keep mandatory carbon reporting

The Aldersgate Group—which includes Aviva, Marks and Spencer, and Sky—has asked the government to retain the mandatory greenhouse gas reporting requirement for businesses. In an open letter on Friday 11 March, the Group said that the need for companies to include their carbon emissions in their annual reports was an important part of investor engagement. It expressed concerns that the government was currently reviewing this policyand pressed it to re-affirm its commitment to mandatory reporting at the announcement of the Budget this week. Executive director Nick Molho said: “The broad scope of the reporting requirements is important as it provides a far more comprehensive picture of a company’s resource efficiency beyond just carbon emissions from the consumption of energy.”
