Climate targets at risk without CCS, warn MPs

The government’s decision to pull funding for its carbon capture and storage (CCS) competition could jeopardise the UK’s progress towards its climate change targets, the energy and climate change select committee has warned. In a report published on Wednesday 10 February, the committee said that without the technology it might be necessary to find large and potentially more expensive carbon savings to meet the emissions targets set in UK legislation. The report also warned that the government might have missed an opportunity to exploit existing oil and gas assets in the North Sea, which could have generated additional revenues.
