Coal industry calls on government to back CCS

The World Coal Association (WCA) has written to the government to argue that it should rethink its decision to withdraw support for carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. In a letter to business, energy and industrial strategy secretary Greg Clark, seen by the Financial Times, WCA chief executive Benjamin Sporton said that CCS was of “critical importance” to the UK’s chances of meeting its environmental goals, and labelled as “highly regrettable” the decision to scrap the commercialisation competition. The letter says that development of CCS could allow for the continued use of coal in the electricity mix beyond 2025.
