Commons committee to investigate smart meters

The Commons science and technology select committee has opened an inquiry into the evidence behind the government’s policy on smart meters. The committee is seeking views on: how smart meters can be expected to affect consumers’ behaviour and how levels of engagement with in-home displays change over time; the extent to which time-of-use tariffs can be expected to alter patterns of energy usage; the anticipated net savings for consumers over time and whether similar savings could be delivered by other means; how data from smart meters could be used to optimise national generation and storage; and the security of the technology. Responses must be submitted by 20 April.
