Cuadrilla begins work at Lancashire fracking site
Cuadrilla confirmed on Thursday 5 January that it had started work at its Preston New Road shale gas site in Lancashire. The site will be home to the first well to be fracked in the UK since 2011. It is one of two sites that were initially rejected for fracking by Lancashire County Council, but the decision was eventually overturned by communities secretary Sajid Javid. Cuadrilla said that work was initially focused on building an access road, while over the next three months it would establish a well pad and site in what is currently a field in the Lancashire countryside. Drilling at the site is anticipated to begin in the spring, with fracking following in the third quarter of the year.
