DECC sets target for capacity market auction
The department announced on Monday 29 June that it would seek to procure 45.4GW in this year’s T-4 capacity market auction. In a letter sent to National Grid, energy and climate change secretary Amber Rudd said that the decision was consistent with National Grid’s Electricity Capacity Report––which suggested the need for 47.9GW in 2019-20––given that a further 2.5GW was to be set aside for a T-1 auction. The letter also noted that interconnectors would be included in this year’s auction. The Panel of Technical Experts, employed by DECC to scrutinise National Grid’s recommendations, said the targeted capacity level was defensible but conservative.
