Drax CEO warns on supply security

The chief executive of Drax has warned that the UK is facing increasing uncertainty about its electricity supplies and that more flexible generation is needed. Speaking to The Times on Monday 30 November, Dorothy Thompson said that renewables technologies such as wind and solar would only be of limited use in bridging the gap left by the coal plant that would retire from service over the next few years. She explained: “The [units at Drax] used to run 24 hours but this year has been the tipping point […] They do run most days, but we have been switching them on and off to shape demand when there is not too much wind or sunshine.”
