Electricity demand to increase sharply in urban areas, report finds
Economic growth and a surge in the deployment of new technologies will drive a sharp upturn in electricity use in urban parts of the country over the next 20 years, a new report has found. Powering Future Cities was prepared by the Centre for Economics and Business Research and published by Smart Energy GB. It said that cities such as Bristol, Cardiff and London would see electricity demand increase by over 30% through to 2035 and that, while this trend was potentially “great news” for the UK’s environmental sustainability, it could jeopardise the security of the nation’s power supply if not properly managed. The report said that cities would need to maintain momentum in addressing these concerns by, for example, introducing measures that incentivised behavioural change.
