Electricity industry calls for stronger EU ETS

The European Commission should seek to strengthen the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) to support the bloc’s progress towards its climate commitments, Eurelectric has said. In a statement on Thursday 24 November, the trade association proposed an increase of the Linear Reduction Factor in Phase IV of the EU ETS to at least 2.4%, and for this to be combined with an increase in the intake rate of the Market Stability Reserve to 24%/ year between 2019-23. Eurelectric said its proposals would increase the EU ETS allowance price and associated compliance costs for the electricity sector before 2030, and would mean that member states with high carbon intensity would face significantly higher investment needs than under the European Commission’s current plans.
