Electricity margins “manageable” this winter: National Grid
The system operator has said it expects it additional balancing services to help keep electricity margins “manageable” in the winter ahead. In its Winter Outlook 2015-16 report, published on Thursday 15 October, National Grid said the de-rated margin for the coming winter would be 5.1%, equating to a loss of load expectation of 1.1 hours. This is supported by the additional balancing services of 2.4GW, including 133MW coming from businesses who have signed up to reduce demand at peak periods if necessary, in return for a payment. On the gas side, supplies are expected to be comfortable this year, owing to good availability of LNG and stable flows from the North Sea and the Norway.
