Energy UK calls for a “whole system” approach to electricity supply challenge

The UK must embrace a range of energy technologies if it wants to avoid an electricity supply crunch in the next decade, Energy UK has said. Responding on Wednesday 27 January to a new report by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, CEO Lawrence Slade acknowledged the need for significant investment in thermal plants, but he said that the value that renewables were adding and could add in the future must also be taken into account. He said: “In other words, we need a policy framework that looks at the whole system, encourages innovation across different technologies, not focusing on single streams, and supports harnessing multiple technologies to deliver an affordable low-carbon electricity supply.”
