EU final energy consumption below 2020 targets
The EU’s final energy consumption is below indicative targets for the end of the decade, according to a new report. The study, issued last week by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), said that, between 2000-14, final energy consumption in the bloc had dropped from 1,133Mtoe to 1,061Mtoe––below the target of 1,086Mtoe. It showed that the largest decline in consumption had been registered in the industry (-17.62%), followed by the residential sector (-9.52%), while the transport and services sectors had seen increases of 2.21% and 16.48% respectively. The report said that this trend was likely to continue as Europe moved towards a more service-based industry.
