EU laws undermine UK electricity market, warns think tank

The EU’s climate policies are hampering the UK electricity market and unnecessarily increasing costs for consumers, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has said. In a report published on Wednesday 23 December, the IEA said that attempts by the EU to promote liberalisation had been only a partial success, and that the problems created by the bias towards renewables were being addressed in a way that further reduced the scope for competition in the power markets. The report suggested that policy-makers should use only “minimum-cost” methods to reduce carbon emissions, such as cap-and-trade schemes or carbon taxes.
