European Commission sets out energy security plans

The European Commission has unveiled a package of energy security measures intended to ensure the bloc can “address possible energy supply interruptions”. The package consists of four components: a Security of Gas Supply Regulation; a requirement for member states to notify the Commission about intergovernmental energy agreements with non-EU countries before concluding them; a Liquefied Natural Gas and Gas Storage Strategy; and a Heating and Cooling Strategy. Speaking on Tuesday 16 February, climate action and energy commissioner Miguel Arias Canete said the EU remained far too vulnerable to the possibility of supply disruptions, and that the proposals would deliver a more flexible system.
