Government consults on energy cost relief for industry

The government issued a consultation on Friday 1 April on introducing an exemption for energy intensive industries (EIIs) from renewables policy costs. The move, first announced at the Autumn Statement, will exempt EIIs from paying £390mn/ year in policy costs on the Renewables Obligation and feed-in tariff. The exemption is expected to come into force in 2017. Business secretary Sajid Javid said: “Help with energy costs has been one of the steel industry’s key asks and, having extended last year the compensation we are paying out, I want to see progress on exempting them altogether.” Responses are invited by 27 May.
