Government legislation to implement CMA recommendations
The Queen’s Speech has confirmed the government’s plans to introduce legislation to implement the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) proposed energy market remedies. The Better Markets Bill—announced on Wednesday 18 May—will aim to “open up markets, boost competition, give consumers more powers and choice and make economic regulators work better”. Meanwhile, a Wales Bill will see powers devolved to Welsh ministers over consenting for all onshore wind in Wales and up to 350MW for all other onshore and offshore projects. The government further used the speech to re-assert its commitment to tackling climate change.
