Government pledges action to meet emissions targets
The government has acknowledged that it will “need to do more” to ensure that the UK meets its carbon budgets, and has pledged to detail the way forward in a new emissions reduction plan. On Thursday 13 October BEIS published its response to the Committee on Climate Change’s Annual Progress Report. The department said that the UK’s emissions were currently projected to be 10% over the level of the Fourth Carbon Budget, and 18% higher than the Fifth Carbon Budget. But it said the emissions reduction plan would represent a “once in a parliament” opportunity for the government to detail how the UK intended to decarbonise during the 2020s and to meet its carbon budgets.
