Government preparing energy market reforms

The government will “shortly” set out proposals aimed at helping consumers to get a better deal in the energy market, a minister has confirmed. Speaking in the Commons, on Thursday 16 March, at the end of a debate on energy prices, Energy Minister Jesse Norman said it was “not acceptable” that five of the Big Six had increased their standard variable prices, “hitting customers hard in the pocket when they are already paying more than necessary”. Along with the publication of a green paper that will examine markets that are not working fairly for consumers, Norman confirmed that the government would respond to the CMA’s energy market investigation “sooner rather than later”.
