Javid approves fracking plans in Lancashire
The government has given the go-ahead to Cuadrilla to frack for shale gas at its Preston New Road site in Lancashire. A ruling, issued by communities and local government secretary Sajid Javid on Thursday 6 October, overturned an earlier decision by local councillors against Cuadrilla’s plans. Javid delayed a decision on fracking at the company’s Roseacre site due to concerns over traffic, though noted that if the highway safety issues identified could be “satisfactorily addressed” he would be minded to grant approval. Javid’s announcement drew criticism from environmental groups, while the Labour Party said that the decision “bulldozes local democracy”.
