Labour leadership candidate calls for climate change action

Yvette Cooper, who is running for leadership of the Labour Party, has accused the Conservative government of “taking us backwards” in efforts to address climate change. In an interview with The Independent on Wednesday 29 July, Cooper said the government did not believe in offering global leadership on tackling emissions, and that new energy and climate change secretary Amber Rudd had “bought into conspiracy theories” on the issue. Cooper is launching policies on climate change today; she will advocate the development of carbon capture and storage technologies, and encourage local action in decarbonising cities and towns.
