Labour says it would ban fracking

The Labour Party would, if elected to government, implement a ban on shale gas development, according to shadow energy secretary Barry Gardiner. Speaking at Labour’s autumn conference on Monday 26 September, Gardiner said that the development of a fracking industry would lock the UK into energy infrastructure based on fossil fuels, whereas it should instead be transitioning to clean energy sources. He also confirmed that a Labour government would launch a “Repowering Britain” programme to support continued progress on decentralising energy, and would legislate to force energy companies to put consumers on their cheapest tariff.
