Ministers play down interconnector concerns

BEIS ministers have expressed confidence that the UK’s vote to leave the European Union will not undermine the development of new interconnector projects. Speaking at an industry conference on Thursday 26 January, energy minister Jesse Norman said he felt it was “extremely unlikely” that Brexit would jeopardise the projects currently being progressed as the countries involved would maintain a mutual interest in increasing their interconnection. Asked about the same issue in the Lords, junior minister Lord Prior similarly suggested that Brexit would not have an impact, and reaffirmed the government’s ambition to see an additional 9GW of interconnector capacity by 2021.
