MPs back energy system operation overhaul
The energy and climate change committee has called for system operation to be transferred from National Grid to an independent system operator (ISO) at the national level and distribution system operators (DSOs) at the regional level. Released on Friday 17 June, the select committee’s report on Low Carbon Network Infrastructure identified that with more generation occurring at the regional distribution level, DSOs must be empowered to balance and control their local grids. The report also called for Ofgem to assess the costs and benefits of levelling connection costs across Great Britain over concerns that costs remain geographically skewed. Policy makers were also urged to reform “archaic” regulation obstructing the deployment of storage technologies.
