MPs criticise Treasury over lack of action on carbon budgets

The environmental audit select committee has raised concerns that the Treasury is failing to encourage progress towards the UK’s carbon budgets. In a report issued on Thursday 17 November, the committee said it had seen “no evidence” that the Treasury was working to deliver cross-government action to meet carbon budgets, despite being uniquely well-placed to do so. The committee said it had been disappointed to learn that the Treasury had signed off on the 2015 Spending Review knowing that it would not help to close the policy gap towards the Fourth Carbon Budget, and explained that the policy decisions taken since May 2015 provided little confidence that more favourable regulatory measures would be forthcoming.
