National Grid could tell windfarms to reduce output this summer

Wind generation might need to be curtailed this summer during minimum demand periods to help National Grid balance the system. In its Summer Outlook report, published on Thursday 7 April, the company said that operating the transmission system during periods of low demand was becoming increasingly challenging, in part owing to the growth of intermittent power capacity. It said: “There is a possibility that we may have to issue emergency instructions to inflexible generators to reduce their output during some weeks in order to balance supply and demand.” National Grid is also exploring new demand side services that offer businesses the opportunity to shift their electricity usage in return for a payment.
