Net zero carbon “unachievable without CCS”

Net zero carbon “unachievable without CCS”

A group of researchers has called for a “reset” of the UK’s objectives and ambitions for the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS). In a report issued on Wednesday 23 March, the Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS) group said that, in the aftermath of the COP21 climate deal, the case for CCS remained “as cogent as ever”, and that the UK had an “immense” CO2 storage asset beneath the North Sea. SCCS director Professor Stuart Haszeldine said: “We welcome the UK energy secretary’s recent commitment to tightening climate law to enable this [zero carbon] ambition, but these good intentions will hit a significant problem if we delay the deployment of CCS any further. The stark reality is that net zero carbon is unachievable without CCS.”
