Osborne to launch infrastructure commission

Chancellor George Osborne will today commit to £100bn of spending in this Parliament on “vital” infrastructure projects. Launching the new National Infrastructure Commission, which will be chaired by former cabinet minister Lord Adonis, Osborne will set out plans to “get Britain building”, and will confirm that infrastructure will be at the heart of next month’s Spending Review. Among the commission’s initial areas of work will be to explore how the UK can better balance its energy supply and demand, and aim towards an energy market “where prices are reflective of costs for the overall system”. Osborne said: “We need to think long term and deliver a cross-party consensus on what we need to build.”
