Paris climate target should be legally binding, says cross-party group


 

A group of MPs, including former Labour leader Ed Miliband, has called on the government to enshrine in law a commitment to net zero emissions by the second half of the century. The commitment formed part of the Paris climate agreement confirmed in December. In a letter in The Guardian, the group––which also included Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, and Conservative MPs Dan Poulter and Graham Stuart––said businesses and government needed the certainty to plan ahead, and that the UK needed to be serious about the scale of the climate challenge by which it was faced.
